🇺🇸🪙 No more pennies: In big change, Treasury will stop minting them
The Trump administration hopes to save big bucks by phasing out the penny.
The Treasury Department has placed its last order for blank pennies and plans to stop minting the one-cent coins as soon as that's exhausted.
Each penny costs nearly four cents to produce, so the move is expected to result in immediate savings of $56 million a year. A Treasury spokeswoman confirmed the decision, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
President Trump called for the phase-out back in February. Canada, New Zealand and Australia have also eliminated their one-cent coins.

City of Buenos Aires, May 14, 2025. – The Office of the President informs that, as committed by President Javier G. Milei during the opening of the ordinary sessions, a Necessity and Urgency Decree has been issued to carry out a profound modification of the Immigration Regime.
Juan Bautista Alberdi stated that "to govern is to populate," and Argentina, since its beginnings, has always been an open country to the world. However, this does not mean that taxpayers should suffer the consequences of foreigners entering solely to make use and abuse of resources that are not theirs, such as the so-called "healthcare tourism." Much less should they tolerate the arrival of those who come to commit crimes.
The extreme facilities that existed up to this date to enter Argentina led to 1,700,000 foreigners immigrating irregularly to our territory in the last 20 years. This measure seeks to restore order and common sense in a system that, unfortunately, and due to the complicity of populist politicians, had been distorted.
First, it is established that, from now on, no foreigner convicted of a crime may enter the country, and those who commit a crime in our territory, regardless of the sentence, will be deported. This implies that offenses with penalties under 5 years, which previously were not grounds for denial of entry or deportation, will now be.
Furthermore, payment for health services will be required from transient, temporary, and irregular residents, and possessing medical insurance will be mandatory to enter Argentina. In 2024 alone, medical care for foreigners in national hospitals implied an approximate cost of 14 billion pesos. This measure aims to ensure the sustainability of the public health system so that it ceases to be a benefit center financed by our citizens.
Among other measures, National Universities are authorized to, if they choose, establish fees for university educational services directed at temporary residents. It is important to clarify that free access to primary and secondary education remains guaranteed for all residents, who may continue accessing it in the same way as Argentine citizens, as stipulated by Article 20 of the National Constitution.
Regarding the acquisition of Citizenship Status, the requirements are tightened, as they always should have been, and from now on it will only be granted to those who have resided continuously in the country for two years or have made a significant investment in Argentina. For permanent residency, proof of sufficient means of livelihood and absence of criminal records will be required.
Society entrusted President Javier G. Milei with the mandate to undertake Argentina’s reconstruction. Ensuring that taxpayers' money is used on them and not on those who abuse our public services, or who commit crimes and are not expelled or prosecuted, and making permanent residency or Citizenship a rigorous process, constitutes a fundamental step in this direction.
Let it be known to all who wish to dwell on Argentine soil: within the law, everything; outside the law, nothing.

🇺🇸🍼🇪🇺It is very likely that births in the United States surpassed those of the European Union for the first time in history last year. 2024 US births came in at 3,618,267 while EU births almost certainly fell below 3.6 million.
In 2023 the EU saw 3,669,659 births. Based on births from all EU countries reported last year a 2-3% drop EU wide seems extremely likely. Just a 2% drop would put 2024 births at 3,596,266. As a reminder the EU has a population more than 100 million larger than that of the US.

🇮🇱 Why are Israelis dressed up as Palestinian nurses and patients in a Jenin hospital? And why are they carrying guns? That’s what you’d call mista’aravim, which roughly translates to “those who disguise themselves as Arabs.”
After yesterday’s undercover Israeli operation in Gaza that ended with the elimination of a senior terrorist, it’s worth briefly exploring Israel’s mista’aravim units—which are a fascinating part of Israel’s security establishment.
For those who’ve seen Fauda, you’ll already be somewhat familiar with the concept. But for those who haven’t, I’ll explain.
Mista’aravim refers to elite Israeli units trained to operate undercover by disguising themselves as Arabs. They blend into Arab communities in high-risk areas such as Judea and Samaria and Gaza in order to gather intelligence, conduct counter-terror operations, and prevent attacks.
In fact, such operations began before Israeli independence, with the 1943 establishment of a unit for young Jewish immigrants from Arab countries who spoke Arabic as their mother tongue, and therefore easily blended into Arab environments.
So they’re all soldiers? Not quite. Some of these units, such as Duvdevan, fall under the IDF. Others, such as Yamas, operate under Israel’s Border Police, a branch of the Israel Police.
Why do these units exist? As is often the case in conflict zones, traditional military operations are not suitable for every situation, especially those which require covert intelligence gathering, precise targeting, and minimal collateral damage in densely populated or sensitive areas.
As you can imagine, these units are highly selective, and its members undergo rigorous training before becoming operational. Unfortunately, over the years, members in these units have been killed and injured in various missions—sometimes far away from Israel’s borders, and in circumstances that due to their classified nature, we will never know their stories.
An interesting fact: Long before he became prime minister, Ehud Barak served in Sayeret Matkal, one of the IDF’s most prestigious combat units. In April 1973, Barak entered Beirut dressed up as a brunette, and along with fellow soldiers, assassinated several key figures in the Palestine Liberation Organization.

🇺🇸🇮🇱🇮🇷 Israel preparing to strike Iran fast if Trump's nuclear talks break down
Israel is making preparations to swiftly strike Iran's nuclear facilities if negotiations between the U.S. and Iran collapse, two Israeli sources with knowledge of the discussions tell Axios.
🔵 One source said the Israeli military thinks its operational window to conduct a successful strike could close soon, so Israel will have to move fast if talks fail. The source declined to say why the military believes a strike would be less effective later.
🔵 Both sources confirmed a CNN report that the Israel Defense Forces have been conducting exercises and other preparations for a possible strike in Iran. "There was a lot of training and the U.S. military sees everything and understands Israel is preparing," one said.
🔵 "Bibi is waiting for the nuclear talks to collapse and for the moment Trump will be disappointed about the negotiations and open to giving him the go ahead," an Israeli source added, using a nickname for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The fifth round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks are scheduled to take place Friday in Rome.

🇮🇱🇪🇺 Israel draws outcry from Europe as soldiers fire near diplomats on West Bank visit
European countries on Thursday condemned an incident where Israeli soldiers fired near a diplomatic delegation in the occupied West Bank, with Italy and France both summoning Israeli ambassadors to explain what happened.
The Israeli military said the delegation had "deviated from the approved route and entered an area where they were not authorised to be" and that soldiers fired "warning shots to distance them away." No injuries or damage were reported.
The foreign ministry of Germany, a stalwart Israel ally, condemned what it called "unprovoked firing." It said the delegation to the West Bank city of Jenin was officially registered and was conducting diplomatic activities in coordination with both the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli Army.

🇵🇱📊 What's not talked about enough in Poland is that young people are far less liberal than their parents. Over 1/3 of young voters yesterday voted for the far-Right Confederation Party candidate Sławomir Mentzen, and overall, a clear majority voted for Right-wing candidates.
Support for Mentzen could also signify a frustration with the political mainstream - Leftist Adrian Zandberg coming in 2nd among young voters supports this theory. But the fact young people see the far-Right as the vehicle to fight the establishment is telling
