Shown here is a reconstruction of Archaeopteryx, which had feathers indicating it could achieve powered flight, according to new research.

Their preparation — a process that took about 1,600 hours in all, O’Connor estimated — paid off. The researchers detected the first evidence in Archaeopteryx of a group of flight feathers called tertials, which grow along the humerus between the elbow and the body and are an important component of all powered flight in modern birds. Since the 1980s, scientists have hypothesized that Archaeopteryx had tertials due to the length of its humerus, O’Connor said. But this is the first time such feathers have been found in an Archaeopteryx fossil.

The discovery of tertials in particular “is an extraordinary finding because it suggests that Archaeopteryx could indeed fly,” said Dr. Susan Chapman, an associate professor in the department of biological sciences at Clemson University in South Carolina.

A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from revoking Harvard University’s ability to enroll or keep its international students.

U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs granted the temporary restraining order after the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday terminated the university’s international student certification. The move barred the school from not only admitting international students, but also ordering current foreign-born students to transfer or lose their legal status.

Harvard University sued the Trump administration on Friday, a day after the federal government said it would block the nation's oldest university's ability to enroll foreign students.

Trump, are in full-swing this week at Fort Cavazos in Killeen, Texas. As soldiers with the 1st Cavalry Division, III Armored Corps were seen loading 28 M1126 Strykers, 28 M2A3 “Bradley” Infantry Fighting Vehicles, 28 M1A2 SEPv3 “Abrams” Main Battle Tanks, and 7 M109A7 “Paladin” Self-Propelled Howitzers onto railcars at Fort Cavazos, bound for Washington.

Next month’s parade in D.C. is expected to be the biggest and most expensive military parade in the nation’s capital city since the National Victory Celebration on June 8, 1991, which celebrated the conclusion of the Gulf War, with cost estimates for the parade placing it between $35-45 million according to officials at the Pentagon. The parade will also be the first to feature tracked-armored vehicles, like tanks, on the streets of Washington, D.C. in decades, with the Department of Defense pledging to place steel plates on roads while also equipping the vehicles with track-pads to prevent damage to roads and bridges along the parade route, one of the major concerns which was raised by city officials in both Washington and Arlington, Virginia.

The Trump administration has barred Harvard University from enrolling international students, in a major escalation of its attacks on one of America’s most prestigious Ivy League schools.

Secretary of homeland security Kristi Noem sent a letter to Harvard on Thursday telling its administration that the university’s student and exchange visitor programme certification had been revoked, “effective immediately”.

The decision comes amid a deepening crackdown in recent months by US President Donald Trump on elite institutions which he accuses of promoting “woke” ideology and failing to tackle antisemitism.

South Africa has the highest ratio of private security personnel to citizens on Earth. No other country comes close. Private firms are now the frontline of law enforcement.

For every 1 police officer (SAPS), there are between 3 and 4 private security guards. Gated communities, malls, farms—even townships—are guarded more by private muscle than the state.

Even when you combine the entire South African Police Service and the Military (SANDF), they are still massively outnumbered by the private sector.

Years of corruption, underfunding, and mismanagement have hollowed out SAPS and SANDF. Police stations are understaffed, undertrained, and often infiltrated by criminals.

South Africa faces some of the highest murder, rape, and armed robbery rates in the world. Criminal syndicates operate with impunity—and the police often arrive after the bodies drop.

What’s happening in South Africa isn’t just about crime, or state failure, or privatization—it’s all of it, layered and intertwined.

The dominance of private security is not just a response to violence. It’s a symptom of something deeper: a nation where the state has lost its grip, and citizens are left to buy their own safety.
