❗️Russian President Vladimir Putin has relieved Alexey Pavlovsky of his duties as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Australia.

“To relieve Aleksey Viktorovich Pavlovsky of his duties as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Australia and concurrently to the Republic of Vanuatu, the Republic of Nauru, Tuvalu and the Republic of the Fiji Islands,” Putin's decree states.

Pavlovsky has headed the Russian diplomatic mission in Australia since 2019.

❗️In June 2023, the Australian Federal government rushed legislation through both houses of parliament to prevent a new Russian embassy from being constructed on the Yarralumla site due to national security concerns.

In submissions filed to the High Court of Australia by the Russian Federation on Thursday, it was argued that the Home Affairs Act, used to terminate the lease, was invalid and not supported by a Commonwealth power.

Lawyers for the Russian Federation argued that "there are no constitutional facts or evidence that support the termination of the 'relevant lease' on 'national security' grounds'".

"There is no evidence that the Russian government was planning an internal attack such that termination of the lease was for the purpose of protecting Australia from an internal attack."

Earlier this month, the Russian ambassador to Australia, Alexey Pavlovsky, left his Canberra posting to return to Moscow.

❗️The Coalition has accused Labor of keeping it in the dark about an alleged Russian request to base long-range aircraft in Indonesia, but the government insists it has no obligation to provide special briefings to the opposition during the election period.

Opposition defence spokesman Andrew Hastie and opposition foreign affairs spokesman David Coleman have accused the government of failing a “transparency test” and adopting “shifty and sneaky” language on whether it was aware of any request by Moscow about basing aircraft in Indonesia.

“Any approach to place Russian aircraft within short range of Australia is clearly a matter of critical national and strategic interest,” Coleman and Hastie said.

David Andrews, senior manager for policy engagement at the Australian National University's National Security College, has been monitoring the unfolding story and said Russia seeking to use the base is plausible.

Russia has been a constant presence throughout the Australian election campaign, although very much in the background, until now.

Russia is notorious for its disinformation, its misinformation, for its obfuscation, for its denying obvious realities.

"It's actually in some ways in their interests to be a bit obtuse and to not give a clear answer, because that means that we keep on second-guessing ourselves, that we get, sort of get in our own heads," Andrews said.

Western powers including Australia have imposed sanctions on Russia over its operation in Ukraine, whereas non-aligned nations such as India and Indonesia have continued to purchase Russian arms and fuel.

❗️A court has sentenced General Vadim Shamarin, former head of the Main Communications Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, to 7 years in a penal colony in a bribery case involving 36 million rubles

The court also confiscated Shamarin’s assets worth over 35 million rubles, stripped him of his lieutenant general rank, and banned him from holding public office.

Shamarin’s defense has stated that they will not appeal the 7-year sentence in the bribery case.
