Tinfoil hat - Nintendo Hardware

So I’m a late Switch 2 adopter.

Had a windfall of play-money land in my hands and Starfox tickled me so I finally got involved. Having a good time. But one of my apprehensions was related to a few games on the previous hardware started to run sooo slowly.

Heres my example. Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

I went back a few months ago on the Switch 1 and the titlescreen took multiple minutes to load up. It took so long I kinda fizzled and gave up.

Now that I have the new hardware, I felt just brainwashed enough to pay for the upgrade to get the switch 2 version of the game.

Booted up in seconds. Not even a splash screen just bam- save file select.
I played a couple levels before taking on a boss I was trying to beat without taking a hit and I ace it second try.

Im convinced the old version on the old hardware had been getting updates that were if not maliciously slowing my system down, were doing so thoughtlessly as the software was aiming at different hardware in some indirect way.
Its just crazy to me how suddenly I feel like my buttons do what I’m doing.

Thoughts? Experiences with software like this?

the other way around.
...

What Roblox actually needs is a Family Gifting System.

Parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts...

They should be able to buy Robux on their own accounts, from their own devices, and securely transfer them to children.

No Premium workarounds.

No hidden monthly limits.

No forcing payment methods onto children's devices.

No AI support closing cases because of technical glitches.

I'm not asking for free Robux.

I'm not asking for special treatment.

I'm asking for a system that protects families instead of making responsible adults jump through endless hoops.

Has anyone else experienced this?

The "Pause instead of Cancel" button is not a mistake. It is a documented design decision and here is exactly how it works.

Been looking into why cancelling subscriptions feels so much harder than signing up. The asymmetry in the UI is not accidental.

The cancel flow for most subscription services follows the same deliberate pattern. A large, friendly, prominently colored "Pause" button sits at the top of the screen. Below it, in smaller grey text, barely visible, is the actual cancel link. The size difference is not a spacing issue. It is a calculated choice to make the default path "stay" and the exit path "work for it."

This is documented as a dark pattern called the Roach Motel, named by Harry Brignull who began cataloguing deliberate manipulative design choices in 2010. Easy to get in, deliberately hard to get out.

But the design goes deeper than just button sizing. The cancel flow is typically gated behind multiple confirmation screens, a survey asking why you are leaving, a retention offer timed to appear right before the final cancel option, and a final screen where the cancel link is visually subordinate to a pause or discount offer. Each step is friction by design, not friction by accident.

The psychology behind why this works is the endowment effect, documented by Richard Thaler, the same researcher behind nudge theory. Once you own access to something, losing it feels disproportionately painful even if you never use it. The cancel button triggers that loss aversion. The pause button offers an escape from the feeling without the company losing the revenue.

Made a full breakdown of how these mechanisms stack here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5124FW5\_l4

Curious whether anyone here has documented specific examples of cancel flows that are particularly egregious. The pattern is consistent enough across services that it feels coordinated even when it is not.

Roblox just convinced me that the "safest" way to buy Robux for a child is to give them access to my credit card. Is this really what they want?

I'm genuinely angry.

Not because of the 500 Robux.

Because of the experience.

I wanted to send 500 Robux to my son.

I didn't want to add my credit card to his account.

I didn't want to save my payment information on his phone.

I wanted to be the responsible adult: buy Robux on my own account, from my own device, and safely transfer them to him.

Apparently, that's asking too much.

First, Roblox tells me I need Premium to send Robux.

Fine.

The first month is free, so I subscribed. I planned to cancel before the renewal because I only wanted to use the feature I had every right to use.

Then I discovered the trap.

There is a monthly sending limit.

Nobody tells you clearly what it is.

Is it based on the amount?

The number of transfers?

Nobody knows.

I had already sent about 1,000 Robux in three transfers.

Then I bought another 500 Robux.

When I tried to send them...

>

So now I own Robux that Roblox happily sold me...

...but I'm not allowed to give them to the person I bought them for.

Then came the support experience.

First, I had to prove I wasn't a robot.

I honestly felt like I was solving 16 different puzzles just to reach support.

After all that...

Who answered me?

Another AI.

Not a person.

An AI.

After a long conversation, the AI finally agreed:

>

Great.

Finally.

Progress.

Then...

The AI asked me to verify my account.

A technical error prevented the verification.

And instead of transferring me to a human...

It simply closed my case.

No human review.

No alternative verification.

No escalation.

Just:

>

Case closed.

Seriously?

Is this what Roblox considers customer support?

And here's what really frustrates me.

What is Roblox's alternative?

If I can't safely gift Robux...

What am I supposed to do?

Put my credit card on a child's account?

Save my payment information on a child's phone?

Let children buy Robux directly?

Kids install random apps.

Kids click everything.

Kids don't think like adults.

That's not an insult.

That's childhood.

A responsible payment system should make it easy for adults to pay and impossible for children to accidentally spend family money.

Instead, Roblox has made the safest option the most difficult one.

And this is where I start questioning Roblox's incentives.

Every time I hear someone say, "Just add your card to your kid's account," I wonder...

Is this really the direction Roblox wants families to take?

Because history shows exactly what happens when children's devices have direct access to family payment methods.

Parents have reported children spending $800 on Roblox without realizing they were using real money here.

Others have reported bills of around $4,000 after an 8-year-old made unintended in-game purchases here.

US groups urge investigation into child safety and spending on Roblox after 10-year-old spends over $7,000 here

These aren't isolated stories anymore.

So if Roblox knows this keeps happening...

...why is the safest option—buying Robux on an adult's account and gifting them securely—buried behind Premium, monthly transfer limits, and support dead ends?

Why is the easiest path still to attach a payment method to a child's ecosystem?

At some point, it's fair to ask difficult questions.

Has Roblox's business model shifted away from simply selling games and toward maximizing access to family spending?

Because from where I'm standing, the incentives feel backwards.

A company that genuinely wants to protect children should make family gifting effortless and make exposing children to payment methods the hardest option—not

Google, why did you remove the '/' keyboard shortcut to refocus the search bar?! 😡

This was one of my favorite and most used shortcuts on google.com — pressing '/' used to instantly focus the search bar so I could quickly edit my search query. Now it's gone and I have to manually click into the box every time. Why would you remove such a simple, useful feature? 😡 Anyone else notice this, or know a workaround?
